Being in the spotlight might seem fabulous sometimes, but it also means more criticism.
From fans on social media to other celebrities who think they have a right to comment, there are way too many people who think it’s okay to criticize celebrities for their appearances.
And we LOVE them for it.
Selena Gomez
(Getty) When Selena Gomez was insulted about her weight on Instagram, she responded with a photo of herself in a bathing suit. The caption read, “I love being happy with me y’all. #theresmoretolove.”
Ariel Winter
Modern Family actress Ariel Winter receives negative comments all too often about her appearance and the clothes she wears, but her responses are always golden. “Dear sorry body-shamers, I looked HOT in that dress,” was just one of her responses. She also tweeted recently, “Know your value. Remember who you are. Love yourself. You’re perfect

Demi Lovato
(Getty) Demi Lovato has struggled with eating disorders, and that’s something she’s been open about. So when the haters starting criticizing her body, she was quick to respond. “Dear haters, you don’t have to like me cause I love you. Everyone’s equal, everyone has a soul, and everyone deserves to be loved.”
Kim Kardashian
(Getty Images) Like many others, Kim Kardashian was criticized for her weight gain during pregnancy, but her response on Twitter was pretty fabulous. “Anyone who has had a baby knows how hard it is to lose weight… your body totally changes! Making fun of me pregnant and making fun of me trying to lose weight now, shame on you. I’m not perfect, but I will never conform to your skinny standards. Sorry!”
Khloe Kardashian
(Getty) Khloe Kardashian has received a lot of criticism for her weight, often called “the fat one” of the Kardashian family. She consistently stands up for herself on the issue. “My weight doesn’t define who I am.”
Sasha Pieterse
Sasha Pieterse received criticism for weight fluxuation, and finally responded with a photo on instagram that read, “I am currently under construction… thank you for your patience.” She elaborated even further with a caption: “As a lot of you have noticed my body has gone through some changes, and I want to clear the air and give you an explanation. I have been facing a bad hormone imbalance that has thrown my body completely out of whack. I want to assure you that I’m healthy and getting everything back on track! A big thanks to all of you who have been in my corner! We live in such a judge mental society that puts every kind of flaw, including weight gain, in the same category. And for those of you who are struggling with any health problem, hormone imbalance, and weight gain of any sort I urge and encourage you to please deal with it in a healthy manor.”
Alyssa Milano
(Getty) It’s amazing what people feel comfortable saying on social media. Jay Mohr criticized Milano’s weight gain after having a baby, to which Milano said, “So sorry you felt the need to publicly shame me. Be well and God Bless. Please send my love to your beautiful wife.”
Wentworth Miller
After receiving criticism for weight gain, the Prison Break star had a clever response, making a meme that he posted on Twitter with a photo of his lean self next to a heavier image, and a caption that read, “When you break out of prison and find out about McDonald’s Monopoly…” But on a more serious note, he also shared that he was depressed and suicidal. “And I turned to food. It could have been anything. Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. But eating became the one thing I could look forward to.”
Iskra Lawrence
When model Iskra Lawrence was called a “fat cow” by some hater on Instagram, she responded with a simple photo of herself in lingerie, surrounded by potato chips.
Amy Schumer
(Getty) Amy Schumer isn’t trying to please anyone. She posted a nearly need photo of herself with a message in response to haters: “I am a size 6 and have no plans of changing. This is it. Stay on or get off. Kisses!”
Melissa McCarthy
After being called “tractor-sized” and a “female hippo,” Melissa McCarthy responded to film critic Rec Reed, saying “I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought, that’s someone who’s in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot.”
Jennifer Lopez
Believe it or not, even Jennifer Lopez has been criticized for her appearance. When a manager told her to lose weight, she fired him. “I was so infuriated that somebody said you couldn’t have a little extra meat on you.”
Kristen Bell
(Getty) Kristen Bell was criticized for weight gain after having a baby, and her response was one everyone should pay attention to. “I am not a woman whose self-worth comes from her dress size,” she said.

Jennifer Lawrence
(Getty) Jennifer Lawrence is proud of her appearance, and you won’t catch her trying out any fad diets. Or any diets at all, for that matter. She once stated, “If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet,’ I’m like, you can go f*ck yourself.”
Jessica Simpson
(Getty) When Jessica Simpson was criticized for her weight gain after having a baby, she ignored it, stating, “It’s ridiculous and unfair. I think any woman who is pregnant and creating a life is pretty much entitled to eat whatever she wants as lons as she’s healthy. I wasn’t going to let the media take away from what was one of the happiest times of my life.”
Lily Allen
(Getty) Lily Allen was criticized by Katie Hopkins for the way she looked after having a baby. Allen responded with a series of tweets: “Yes, after tragically losing a child so late into my pregnancy, I may have gained a few pounds, I am one of many who find comfort in food. The two pregnancies that followed were terrifying because of what had happened before and I was pretty much on bed rest for 20 months. I wasn’t exercising because I didn’t want to take any risks, and funnily enough, the survival of my children felt more important than being thin.”
Kelly Clarkson
When Katie Hopkins criticized Kelly Clarkson for her weight gain (and seriously, what is it with this woman criticizing everyone?) she responded with grace. “Oh, she’s tweeted something nasty about me? That’s because she doesn’t know me. I’m awesome! It doesn’t bother me. It’s a free world. Say what you will,” Clarkson said.
Gabourey Sidibe
(Getty) Gabourey Sidibe may have had the very best comeback of them all after she was criticized for her appearance at the Gold Globes. “To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on the way to my dream job last night. #JK”

Sam Smith was insulted about his appearance by Howard Stern (ugh), who called him a “fat, ugly motherf*cker” and said he was effeminate. Smith chose to ignore the comments on Twitter, but then responded in the best way ever during his Grammy’s acceptance speech. “I just want to say that before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard. I was trying to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow and the people started to listen.”
Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling thinks it’s annoying for people to make backhanded compliments. “They’re like ‘It’s so refreshing that Mindy feels so comfortable to like let herself go and be a fat sea monster,'” she said. “It takes a lot of effort to look like a normal/chubby woman.”
Adele
(Getty) Adele’s response to being called “a little too fat?” She takes it with a grain of salt. “I’ve never wanted to be a skinny mini with my tits out. I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that.”
Lena Dunham
When a fashion blogger called Lena Dunham “daring” for showing off her chubby thighs by wearing shorts, Dunham responded by saying, “My response is, get used to it because I’m going to live to be 100 and I am going to show my thighs ever day till I die.”
Serena Williams
Serena Williams has an easy response to haters who call her too masculine. She just posts new photos of herself in a bikini or a beautiful gown.
Emma Stone
(Getty) Emma Stone has been criticized for being too thing, with comments that say “she looks sick” or that she should “eat a sandwich.” Her response is an honest one. “I’ve shamed myself for it. We shame each other online. We’re always too skinny or too fat or too tall or too short. They’re just confirming this feeling I have about myself. I’m trying to figure my body out. It bothers me because I care so much about young girls. We’re shaming each other and we’re shaming ourselves, and it sucks.”
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga responded to insults about her weight gain with a pretty simple and pretty perfect response. “I’d rather be fat than shallow,” she said on Twitter.
