There are times when going blackface could simply be described as a "poor decision."
Case in point: When Julianne Hough darkened her mug in order to dress up for Halloween as a character from Orange is the New Black.
Then there are times when going blackface can only be described as "THE MOST RACIST THING ANYONE HAS EVER DONE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD."
Case in point: two Kansas State University students named Paige Shoemaker and Sadie Meier.
The women have become viral sensations embarrassments after sharing the above photo on Snapchat.
Not only is each wearing blackface, they are also flashing the West Side "W" sign and Shoemaker has written "Feels good to finally be a nigga" across the image.
What the WHAT now?!?
Fortunately, Twitter, which often specializes in manufactured outrage, reacted to this incident with the proper amount of shock and outrage.
"Welcome to Kansas State University. Where breakfast in the morning is some K-State Family with a side of Racism," wrote one user.
Others, meanwhile, blamed this on Donald Trump.
That could be a stretch, only in that these people were clearly racist long before Trump ran for President.
But does he empower them to think such actions are more acceptable? One could make that argument.
Earlier this month, Jason Alden (who was involved in his own blackface scandal when he dressed as Lil Wayne last year) came out and said people are too "sensitive" about this issue.
But we’re guessing even his jaw would drop upon seeing the photo above.
In response to it, Kansas State posted a special alert on its website, prompting the university’s interim associate provost for diversity, Zelia Wiley, to say the following in a long open letter to KSU students, faculty and staff.
It reads:
On Sept. 15, the university received notice that a derogatory social message and photo was sent out via social media.
The involved person is not currently enrolled at the university. It is our understanding the second individual in the photo is not associated with the university.
Immediately upon notification, the Campus Climate Response Team, or CCRT, which consists of representatives from the Office of Diversity, Office of Institutional Equity, Office of Student Life, the K-State Student Union and Division of Communications and Marketing, met to address this recent social media posting.
This racially offensive photo with a derogatory message has upset the K-State family and is not in concert with our principles of community. Such messages on social media are harmful to all.
Wiley went on to say that the school will “reinforce its value for diversity and inclusion while also communicating our principles of community for all students, faculty and staff."
Shoemaker is also a former member of the sorority Zeta Tau Alpha.
This is what that organization wrote as an attempt to distance itself from her:
We have become aware that a former member of our chapter has posted racist comments on her social media channels.
While she did join the Beta Upsilon Chapter at Kansas State University in 2013, she has not been a member since spring 2015 and is no longer affiliated with the organization in any capacity. Her words and actions certainly do not reflect the values and principles of Zeta Tau Alpha.
Our Creed teaches us to look for the good in everyone and to seek understanding in order to gain true wisdom. Our Fraternity’s membership includes women of many races, nationalities and religions and we all strive to seek the noblest in every endeavor.
So at least most people get it, right?
And the others are all probably voting for Trump.
