Earlier this month, Britney Spears’ mom seemed to support the theory that her daughter’s social media was being tampered with.

Now, Britney Spears’ dad is suing one of Britney’s most vocal, most visible fans for espousing that very theory.

Is he trying to shoot down lies and rumors … or just silence critics who want to end his conservatorship and Free Britney?

TMZ reports that Jamie Spears, Britney’s dad, is suing on behalf of Britney’s conservatorship.

His target is Anthony Elia, the creator of the "Absolute Britney" blog — a blog that we mentioned in a recent report, in fact.

Jamie claims that the blog defamed him by speculating that his team was deliberately hiding positive comments on Britney’s social media.

Elia’s theory led some to wonder if Jamie was trying to gaslight Britney to make it seem like she had no support among her own fans.

Now, Jamie has hired celebrity lawyer Larry Stein to take Elia to court for speculating about what Jamie sees as a mere hunch.

Suing one of your daughter’s most vocal fans is a hell of a choice on any day.

But what strikes us about this is that Elia has had very positive interactions with another member of the Spears family: Lynne Spears.

Just a little over a week ago, Britney’s mom commented on the exact post that has now landed Elia in trouble with jamie.

She, too, had observed that sometimes positive comments seemed to vanish from Britney’s Instagram.

She said that it had happened to her own, and later remarked that her words suddenly reappeared after she spoke about them publicly.

We of course have no idea if there’s some IT team micromanaging Britney’s comments. It may just be the algorithm.

Being sued is not, in and of itself, evidence that that Elia was uncovering the "truth."

But Lynne spoke about the same thing that Elia did, and he’s now being dragged to court.

Is Jamie going to sue the mother of his children? We know that they split in 2002, but they were married for 27 years.

Because Elia didn’t say much more than Lynne did on the subject, and she acknowledged that he’s a genuine fan of Britney’s.

Whether Elia was right on the money or totally pulling theories out of thin air, this seems like an odd target for Jamie to sue.

Some fans cannot help but wonder if this conservatorship has gone on for long enough.

That, more than questions about Britney’s voluntary commitment to a mental health facility earlier this year, is why cries of "Free Britney" have sprung up.

Britney’s work on her mental wellness served as a reminder to her millions of fans throughout the world that she is not, well, totally free.

We’re not saying that she’s a damsel in distress or held against her will.

But if someone has an active conservatorship, there are aspects of their lives that are managed by other people.

Britney is 37 years old. She is an amazing mother. A lot of people

But sometimes, fans can go overboard, even when they have only the best of intentions.

(I am a Britney stan first and a person second, so I am very much included in this)

Maybe some of the cries of "Free Britney" put more pressure on Britney when she needed a break.

Maybe the constant questions about her family cause undue stress for her and her kids without doing any real good.

And maybe Britney can speak up for herself if she ever needs to.

This isn’t a soap opera. If Britney needed t cry for help, couldn’t she ask a friend or maybe even her boyfriend Sam Asghari to do some interviews?

That doesn’t mean that her most vocal and passionate fans should be silenced just for speaking about what they’re perceiving.

We wonder what Lynne will have to say about Jamie firing this warning shot across her bow.
