The patriarch of his family and a respected businessman who founded Venue Magazine, Echevarria was best known to television fans as the husband of Real Housewives of Miami star Alexia.

The couple separated in May of last year, but remained a part of each other’s lives.

In light of her loss, Alexia Echevarria has released the following statement to E! News:

The last 24 hours have been a nightmare for my family and I.

It is life once again showing me that at the drop of a hat, things can change. I can’t imagine what my life will be like walking into my office every day and not seeing Herman or having our family dinners with the kids and family.

We were in this for fifteen years and although we were currently separated and living in separate homes, our spiritual and emotional connection was stronger than ever.

I would like to take this time to thank everyone for the incredible outpour of support that has come my way through messages, calls and social media.

I am sharing this image with you that we took this past Father’s day because this is how I will always remember US.

Shortly after news of Herman’s death went viral, Alexia posted an Instagram picture of the following message:

"The Echevarria family is heartbroken over the sudden passing of our patriarch Herman Echevarria this morning. He was a family man, a hardworking businessman, dedicated to helping others and a pillar of his community that was loved by everyone who’s life he touched.

"We ask that you Please respect our privacy during this time of grieving."

Insiders close to the Echevarria family tell E! that they think that the former council member passed away from a fatal heart attack.

Echevarria was a beloved and respected member of his community, as former Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas made a point of saying yesterday:

"He has done a lot of positive things for this community. He was a real deal, a real friend. It wasn’t just about politics. He was a complete community person and did a lot of good work on many philanthropic and charitable causes."

Echevarria is survived by his children Nelson and Herman Jr., and stepchildren Peter and Frankie.
