While Van Patten will be best remembered for his TV roles, his career in showbiz spanned an astonishing nine decades, beginning with a small part on Broadway when he was just 7 years old.

Van Patten went on to appear in more than 150 films and television series.

His resume includes beloved classics such as Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, as well as recurring roles on beloved modern sitcoms like Arrested Development and That 70s Show.

But it’s his work as loving patriarch Tom Bradford on Eight is Enough that will be most fondly remembered by fans. The show ran for five seasons on ABC in the late ’70s.

Van Patten never really retired, appearing most recently in a cameo on the TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland. In November of last year, he joined his Love Boat castmates for a reunion in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

No official cause of death has been released, but Van Patten’s family says he had been suffering from worsening complications from diabetes for several years. The actor reportedly passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones.
